Who we are

The Strategic Mailing Partnership (SMP) is a professional body that represents and protects the interests of mailing houses across the UK.

Membership is open to all mailing houses, large and small, across the country – the SMP is the only mailing house partnership you will ever need to join.

Sponsored by Royal Mail Wholesale, and supported by the whole of Royal Mail, the SMP aims to raise standards in the mailing industry and promote better mail for all; from the senders and receivers, but more importantly, the manufacturers and mailing agents operating behind the scenes.

The SMP facilitates the sharing of best practice amongst its members and champions mail manufacturing processes that help to drive the industry forward and deliver ‘better mail’.

The SMP is the largest group in the UK of mail and print suppliers and service providers. Its members – known as ‘The Mailmakers’ – belong to the only known specialist supply chain network in Post in Europe.

Snapshot History

Launched in 2008, the SMP successfully recruited over 100 members within its first two years and took on a number of key roles in several consultations, received many briefings, hosted multiple Roadshows and much more.

As the Partnership flourished throughout 2012 and 2013, the SMP focused on being known as mail manufacturers and the shippers into the pipeline.

Then, the emergence of MarketReach and exciting new briefings for members soon followed in 2014 and 2015, plus the SMP’s biggest breakthrough to date – early consultation on MailMark.

This continued into 2016, and involved a closer engagement with Operations to resolve issues on tray supply and cage hygiene. SMP then transferred to Royal Mail Wholesale and a whole new world of opportunities emerged, including formally rebranding as SMP – THE MAILMAKERS.
