Paperplanes, a programmatic direct mailing house based in London, took home this year’s prestigious Platinum Envelope Award at the SMP Mail Performance Awards for its work with The Bower Collective. To celebrate, we sat down with Dan Dunn, co-founder of Paperplanes, to find out more about the winning campaign!

What inspired you to enter the awards this year?
We entered the awards because we are proud of the work that we do and believe that it demonstrates the innovation and creativity that is possible in the mailing industry. We also wanted to recognise the hard work and dedication of our team, and we felt that the awards were a great way to do that!

How do you think the Campaign Awards reflect the successes of the industry?
The Campaign Awards highlight the most innovative and effective mail campaigns of the year. The awards also recognise the businesses and individuals who are making a significant contribution to the industry.

What does it mean to win the Platinum Envelope?

The Bower Collective’s mission is to guide consumers towards sustainable choices for their daily lives. Similarly, our mission is to help brands to utilise data to create more relevant postal campaigns and minimise waste.

This synergy between the brands is the key to success. We are thrilled that the SMP has chosen our work for their prestigious Platinum Envelope, which highlights the significance and value of our approach. Winning this award is a great honour for us, it is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of our team, recognising our commitment to innovation and creativity.

How will winning the Platinum Envelope impact your business?
Winning the Platinum Envelope Award will help to raise the profile of our business and it will give us credibility with potential clients. It will also motivate us to continue to innovate and to produce high-quality mail campaigns.

Do you think the Campaign Awards can inspire more businesses to push themselves within the industry?
Yes! The awards showcase the best of the best, and they show what is possible when businesses are innovative and creative.

Tell us about your personal industry journey.
I co-founded Paperplanes, along with my business partner Steve, in 2017 with the goal of creating a better way for marketers to use direct mail in the digital age.

Between the two of us, we have more than 30 years of experience in marketing, and we’ve seen firsthand how the landscape has changed in recent years. Digital marketing has become increasingly important, but direct mail still has a lot to offer. It’s a tangible, personal channel that can be very effective in reaching customers and driving results.

Paperplanes uses data and analytics to ensure that every campaign is personalised and relevant to the recipients. We track the results of our campaigns closely, so we can continually optimise their performance.

We’re proud to say that Paperplanes has helped a lot of businesses increase sales and grow their businesses, helping marketers boost their customer growth strategy and existing customer spending through targeting highly relevant and personalised postal marketing campaigns that complement social media and email retargeting. I’m passionate about helping businesses grow, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for Paperplanes. We’re constantly innovating and adding new features to our platform, so we can stay ahead of the curve and continue to provide our clients with the best possible service.

How do you think the SMP Awards benefit the industry?
The SMP Awards have a significant impact on the mailing industry in several ways. Firstly, they help to increase the industry’s visibility and showcase its top performers. Secondly, they provide a platform for businesses to connect with one another and learn from their peers. Thirdly, they inspire innovation and creativity within the industry by recognising and rewarding outstanding achievements.

How do you think the SMP can benefit the print and mail industry going forward?
The SMP can benefit the print and mail industry by continuing to promote the value of mail and by supporting the development of new and innovative mail products and services. The SMP can also play a role in advocating for the industry and in ensuring that the needs of print and mail businesses are met.
